Rival trading companies were combined to form the Dutch East Indies Company in 1602 to grow and protect the Dutch Republic's trade in the Indian Ocean. Granted monopoly trading rights, this company flourished for two centuries. Its ships brought spices, textiles and porcelain to Europe, and its governor-generals concluded treaties with native princes, built forts and maintained armed forces and carried on other administrative functions on behalf of the Dutch government. Explore the forces that led to the formation of this powerful conglomerate and the wealth that it subsequently brought to Holland.
For those interested in learning Dutch to enhance their visit to Amsterdam, we will be offering semi-private language classes before the start of each day as an optional add-on. The class size will be limited to 4 students to allow for focused study. Open to students of all levels.
